چکیده

This chapter demonstrates that the ecosystems supporting the marine fisheries on Canada's east and west coasts have greatly changed under exploitation by industrial fisheries. These changes, reflected in the decline in the abundance of key species and the composition of the fisheries' landings, imply changes in the support provided by the ecosystems in which the fisheries are embedded. This further implies that ecosystem changes contribute sufficiently to the dynamics of fisheries to require their being considered explicitly in assessment and predictions, along with the within-species changes (e.g., of population structure or abundance) that have so far been the almost exclusive object of attention for fisheries scientists and managers. Some longer-term economic and ethical implications of the trends presented here are discussed, following a presentation of the ecosystems and of an index of fisheries impacts on them, from the beginning of the century to the present, for both the eastern and western coasts of Canada.

Marine Biodiversity in the Atlantic and Pacific Coasts of South America: Knowledge and Gaps

The marine areas of South America (SA) include almost 30,000 km of coastline and encompass three different oceanic domains--the Caribbean, the Pacific, and the Atlantic--ranging in latitude from 12∘N to 55∘S. The 10 countries that border these coasts have different research capabilities and taxonomic traditions that affect taxonomic knowledge. This paper analyzes the status of knowledge of mari...

Convergence, divergence, and parallelism in marine biodiversity trends: Integrating present-day and fossil data.

Paleontological data provide essential insights into the processes shaping the spatial distribution of present-day biodiversity. Here, we combine biogeographic data with the fossil record to investigate the roles of parallelism (similar diversities reached via changes from similar starting points), convergence (similar diversities reached from different starting points), and divergence in shapi...

Clinico-epidemiologic Study on Marine Envenomations and Injuries in South Iran, Persian Gulf Coasts

Background: The Persian Gulf is a suitable habitat for various types of marine species. This study was conducted with the aim of determining the epidemiology and clinical findings of injuries inflicted by marine creatures in the Persian Gulf, south Iran. Methods: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, medical records of patients with diagnosis of marine animal exposures treated at 6 refe...

Per capita invasion probabilities: an empirical model to predict rates of invasion via ballast water.

Ballast water discharges are a major source of species introductions into marine and estuarine ecosystems. To mitigate the introduction of new invaders into these ecosystems, many agencies are proposing standards that establish upper concentration limits for organisms in ballast discharge. Ideally, ballast discharge standards will be biologically defensible and adequately protective of the mari...

بررسی غلظت جیوه در آب و ماهی های سواحل جنوبی دریای خزر، ایران

Background and Objective: Mercury (Hg) contamination in marine ecosystems is a major threat to human health in the developing countries like Iran. The main route of mercury exposure is from consumption of fish and seafood. Upon entering mercury in human bodies, Hg is converted into methyl mercury, which may lead to serious implications including neurological disorders, reproductive abnormalitie...
